Gizem Akildiz was born in Amed, Kurdistan, and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is passionate about supporting underserved communities and has several years of experience with global health and research. She is currently a first-year medical student at the UC Davis School of Medicine in Sacramento, CA.

Van is an undergraduate student based in Erbil, Kurdistan.
